Composition is key. Follow basic photography rules such as lead in lines, the rule of thirds and shooting in the golden hour. Where that is not possible due to the subject, then telling a story or creating interest with texture or colour can also give great results. Some images actually look better in Black and White rather than colour so keep that option open.
